George R. R. Martin Talks Possible Films To Wrap Up Game of Thrones

George R. R. Martin has been hinting about a possible movie, or movies to finish op his sprawling HBO epic Game of Thrones, based on his A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series. He also mentioned that a movie may be based on his prequel novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg.  These prequel stories revolve around a group of characters, including Ser Duncan the Tall, who lived in the mythical Westeros ninety years before the events depicted in his book series A Song of Ice and Fire.

Says Martin:

“It all depends on how long the main series runs… Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

He may be debating with the team at HBO on the prospect of when these films will be made. according to i09, the team at HBO including the network’s president want the show to last seven to eight seasons while Martin would like to see the show streamline two of the books, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons into one season. There are originally supposed to be seven books in the entire series, the last two titles tentatively titled as The Winds of Winter and A Dawn of Spring (rumored title, anyway). My question in all of this is that since it takes the author ages to get a book out and the show is fast catching up to those who have read the books already, will the show – and possible films – end before the last two books in the series are published because it certainly looks like that is where things are headed. A real head- scratcher for readers of the series.

Game of Thrones, season 4 premiers April 6th, 2014 on HBO.
