Anime News: Hayao Miyazaki Retiring

Greeting fellow fanatics of all things fantastical!

I bring some news for Studio Ghibli fans — the beautiful new movie The Wind Rises is to be the last of legendary Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki’s eleven marvlous animated films. This news comes from Koji Hoshino, one of Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli heads, at the Venice Film Festival.

The Wind Rises looks to be a more adult-ish themed animation, themed around the life  of Jiro Horikosh, an airplane designer in the first half of the 20th century. It looks to be keeping up with the tradition of Studio Ghibli of being a deep, touching and tear jerking tale (like seriously, just the trailer makes me want to cry, it’s so amazing.)

English subtitles, yay!

Disney shall be releasing the film in the U.S though there is not yet a release date on that, however the film was released in Japan in July. (Really need to work on my Japanese)

If you’re up for other amazing, beautiful and stunning movies from Studio Ghibli and to celebrate the incredible director Hayao Miyazaki, other such fabulous movies he has done (just to name a few), Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, The Cat Returns, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away.

So, while I am sad to see Hayao Miyazaki (he is 72, I figure it’s about time to have a rest) I am so glad he has brought such amazing stories to life.

  1. Oh this makes me so sad. My family and I are HUGE Miyazaki fans. We own all of his films and will definitely be snatching the latest up as soon as its available. He is, quite simply, one of the most brilliant storytellers alive today and will be sorely missed.
