Stuff.co.nz is reporting that a Lord of the Rings museum is close to being confirmed with the city of Wellington in New Zealand. Wellington City Councilor John Morrison is confirming plans for the museum in the city center. This long-planned project has been in the works since the release of Fellowship of the Ring 2001 and has received support from the Wellington City Council since the idea was put forth. It appears to be a matter of simply getting final site approval and city funding to begin construction.
The museum would contain props, costumes and other memorabilia from the films would be featured in the museum. They would be permanently on display. In the past the rights to display some of these items have been licensed to the Te Papa Museum of New Zealand after a temporary agreement was reached with Peter Jackson. They were on display from 2002-2003 and again in 2006.
The Peter Jackson films have been a huge boon to New Zealand Tourism and according to a recent survey, 8.5% of visitors to Wellington have said that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had a direct impact on their choice of vacation spots. More details can be found at Stuff.co.nz
