Game of Thrones TV Series “Will Spoil the Books”

With the recent announcement that George R.R. Martin is focusing on writing the next installment The Winds of Winter (insert impatient sigh), Game of Thrones fans are itching to watch the fifth season, staring April 12th.

With the series poised to outpace Martin’s books, showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have recently confirmed that the new shows will “spoil the books.” Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) spoke of this at the Oxford Union.

With the ending of the books on the horizon, show producers were concerned that they could not take a “multiple year hiatus” until Martin finishes the series. Benioff discusses this in a response at the Oxford Union:

“Luckily, we’ve been talking about this with George for a long time, ever since we saw this could happen, and we know where things are heading. And so we’ll eventually, basically, meet up at a pretty much the same place where George is going. There might be a few deviations along the route, but we’re heading towards the same destination. I kind of wish that there were some things that we didn’t’ have to spoil in terms of the books, but we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on…and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Despite the reported requests from HBO and fans, Martin stated that he will not yield to the pressure to write quickly: “The main thing is to make the book as good as I can possibly make it,” Martin told the press Monday in San Francisco during the premiere of season five. “Fifty years from now nobody is going to care how frequently the books came out. They will care if the books are as good as they can possibly be, if the books stand the test of time. That’s what I struggle with as I write.”

Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen) told the press that season 5 will reveal new and interesting twists, as well as together many different plots, “The threads we’ve been weaving are really coming together now, and that is quite satisfying to watch.”
