Of Mermaids and 17th Century French Kings

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (best known for her roles as Emperor [not Empress] Wu Zetian in the currently-airing Empress of China TV series and Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past) will be taking on a new role as a mermaid held captive by French king Louis XIV, played by Pierce Brosnan, this spring. The Moon and the Sun is based on the novel of the same name by Vonda N. Mcintyre and will transform the actress by way of motion capture into an aquatic creature that will present mainstream audiences with a different version of mermaid than they’re used to.

In the book, the captured mermaid is believed to be a source of immortality by means of eating her flesh.

Long story short: this ain’t Disney’s Ariel.

The Moon and the Sun will be released in the US on April 10, 2015, and also stars Kaya Scodelario (Skins), William Hurt (A History of Violence), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), and Ben Lloyd-Hughes (Divergent).
