Continuing with our costuming know-how series in the run-up to the biggest dress-up holiday of the year, the second installment deals with – Cersei Lannister. Don’t you just love this ever-scheming, plotting woman intent on malice and intrigue? Whilst going as Daenerys would appeal to those of us who love a grand and heroic entrance, Cersei is more subtle – and therefore, guising yourself as her might be a simpler costuming task. Or not.
If you choose to make Queen Cersei your alter ego for this Halloween, the main thing would be to make yourself recognizable and distinctive: and since the villainous Queen’s outfit of choice are long and elegant medieval gowns, there is a possibility of being mistaken for a zillion other characters, from Eowyn of Rohan to Guinevere of the Arthurian epics… although who knows, Cersei herself might have used a case of mistaken identity to her own advantage… (do I hear a new plot-line calling?).
Anyway, on to the costuming business.
Cersei is recognized for her hairstyle with crown-like braids (she is not a Queen for nothing, right?). Naturally, if you have long hair, you can use it to advantage when designing your costume. The tutorial below recreates a style from the actual series (all the better for making yourself as recognizable as possible!), notwithstanding some rather non-medieval background music! 😉
Now to the costuming itself – as it was already said, to be true to the character you would probably don a full-length medieval gown (like virtually every second female character in the fantasy genre). One way to stand apart is, of course, you guessed it – to dress in the Lannister colours of yellow and red (kudos for any lion-themed paraphernalia!). Or just choose any other colour… you are going to be the Queen of that party in any case. 😉

The other brilliant thing about dressing up as Cersei Lannister is, if you believe the Wiki of Ice and Fire (http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Cersei), “…as of A Feast for Crows she has begun to gain weight…” Wine-drinking with Jaime aside, now this is great news in a world where every magazine seems to promote “slimming down before that party” – and being quite free to indulge in cakes and chocolate before the Halloween night is great news in any case! Now, for that strawberry meringue dessert in order to get some authenticity… 😉
