Although J.J. Abrams was originally to helm all three films in the new trilogy, Looper director Rian Johnson has been signed on to write and direct Episode VIII.

While Deadline reports that Johnson is in the process of making a deal with Lucasfilm to write and direct both Star Wars Episode VIII and IX, The Wrap claims that the filmmaker is both writing and directing VIII but only penning the treatment for IX. IGN

With films like Brick, The Brothers Bloom, and Looper, along with three episodes of Breaking Bad under his belt, Johnson seems like a pretty good choice as both writer and director for Star Wars. What do you guys think?

  1. Im not certain abrams ever signed on for the whole trilogy, and i think its a good thing. the movies will have a different feel to them, which lent itself well in the original trilogy. Personally Im kinda meh with abrams and I’m curious what other directors will do. i think he’s done well with the characters and excitement of trek, (though i cringe at the myriad nonsensical plot points of the first new trek), and he’ll bring some fresh excitement to star wars, but moving on afterwards is just fine with me. I’m really excited about how ll this is playing out, as a total star wars nerd. I hop harrison ford’s leg injury doesnt compromise the breadth of his part in the new one. itd be a real shame if they actually had to change the story or cut down his screen time to deliver he film on schedule. man i dont think theyd do that though? right? ::PPP interesting times ahead…ramble over. continue on earthlings
