New Chapter of "Winds of Winter" Released Today

A new chapter from the highly anticipated forthcoming novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series, Winds of Winter has been released on George R.R. Martin’s website.  Martin wrote on his blog yesterday, “With season 4 of HBO’s GAME OF THRONES almost upon us, I thought the time was ripe for me to give my readers another taste of WINDS OF WINTER. ”

The chapter, entitled “Mercy” seems to follow the point of view of a character (unsurprisingly) called Mercy. In true Martin fashion, it is dark, ominous, and tantalizingly features one of our favorite characters.  Martin states, “it’s new in that it is material that no one but my editors (well, and Parris, and David and Dan, and a few others) have ever seen before, but it’s old in that it was written a long time ago, predating any of the samples that you have seen.  The first draft was, at any rate.  I’ve rewritten it a dozen times since then.”

Though the release date for Winds of Winter is still unknown, Martin has been able to release two other chapters of the novel so far. Last February a Tryion chapter was released with the launch of the new update of the Song of Ice and Fire app and way back in 2011 we were lucky enough to get a Theon Greyjoy chapter.

All in all,  a good tie over until the 4th season of Game of Thrones, which premiers April 6th on HBO.
