Abrams Wants His Star Wars Movies to "Feel Real"

1437680-luke_skywalker1-2642322Many of us go to the movies as escapism from work, financial worries, commitments we really don’t want to think about, and interpersonal drama. It seems that lately even the movies have retreated into themselves to escape the real world. Where movies used to have an earthly weight to them (look at Hitchcock’s suspense thrillers and dramas or Steven Spielberg’s works) and seem as if they could actually happen/have happened, the big releases seem to focus more on explosions and high-tension action than anything else.

Thankfully J.J. Abrams, while guilty of this himself, seems to have Star Wars fans in mind while planning out Episode VII. The director told Entertainment Weekly:

I remember reading a thing somewhere, someone wrote about just wanting [the new film] to feel real; to feel authentic. I remember I felt that way when I was 11 years old when I saw the first one. As much of a fairy tale as it was, it felt real. And to me, that is exactly right.

How exactly he intends to make his contributions to the franchise “feel real” is unclear, but given his obvious love for the material and the fact that the movies will be shot on film instead of digitally is reassuring.

Production on Episode VII will begin in 2014 with the film’s release in late 2015.
